Beating Alcohol Addiction

alcohol addiction

alcohol addictionIf you drink alcohol regularly, ask yourself if you are drinking more today than you were five years ago?  Go further back. Do you think you were drinking more five years ago than ten years ago?

Alcoholism is a progressive disease. For regular drinkers, this means in five years from now you will probably be drinking more than you are today. If you feel like you are in this situation, you may want to take some action and get some help.

There are certainly people who can drink regularly and would not feel they have a problem with alcohol. No one can make that determination for you. Even if others say you have a problem, it won’t help unless you come to the realization for yourself.

Science believes there is no cure for alcoholism. But there is help available. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has a high success rate for those willing to go through their program. There may be other programs that can help as well. Find one that is right for you and make the commitment to stick with it.

When alcohol is no longer a part of your life, you will notice both physical and mental changes. Pains that you associated with aging will go away. This is not to say that there aren’t age-related pains. It’s just that some that you thought were age-related were related to drinking. Also, you will have a renewed amount of energy. You will also save a tremendous amount of money. Alcoholic products are quite expensive.

Another great benefit is you will sleep better at night. While drinking alcohol can help you get to sleep quicker, you go into a deeper sleep. When this happens, you tend to wake up in the middle of the night. After you stop drinking, your sleep will even out, and you will sleep more regularly.

Some people mistakenly believe they can cut back on their alcohol intake. They may succeed for a short period, but tend to return to their prior habits. It can come back with a vengeance as well, where they start drinking even more than before they tried to reduce.

If you admit to having a problem with drinking alcohol, realize that you need to give it up permanently. There is no going back. Accept that it has control over you and use that as the foundation for giving it up. It is important to take the appropriate measures never to go back to it.
